For the last three years, I have created a list of goals in January that I want to accomplish over the course of the year. Resolution doesn’t seem like the right word (since those seem to be given up by February). It’s more like my proposed agenda for the year. In 2009, my goals were as follows:
- Learn to cook (I practiced on my Kentucky housemates and parents and they all lived to tell the tale).
- Take the GRE (After weekly study sessions during the fall, I took the test right before going home for Thanksgiving).
- Get BMI under control (As many of you witnessed, I was the Incredible Shrinking Sam from June to December and took my BMI from 29.8 in the overweight range to 23.5 in the normal range).
- Buy Furniture (I furnished my room and other various parts of my very first apartment in August ‘09).
- Apply to grad school (Oops).
After my ‘09 success, I created another list of goals in January of 2010:
- Cook more (Dann and I cooked together several times a week in Minneapolis and now, due to our poverty, cook at home almost every single day).
- Run a 5k (First, I ran a 7k. Then I ran THREE 5ks. Goal completed several times over).
- Find mentors (Sought advice and career guidance from coworkers and family friends. Although, unfortunately, none of it has lead to a job yet).
- Take a vacation (Laid by a pool in Phoenix in March ‘10. Done and done).
- Maintain weight (I started the year and ended the year at the same weight).
Here’s what’s on the docket for 2011:
- Run a half marathon (Let’s see if my knees can hold out).
- Save over $1,000 (To replace the savings I’ve used up during my current joblessness).
- Learn basic web and graphic design (Already signed up for “Getting Started with Adobe Photoshop” seminar).
- Apply to grad school (Let’s try this again…).
What’s your agenda for 2011?
